The risk of cardiovascular disease and malignancy is considered to be high in patients with membranous nephropathy.

328 patients with membranous nephropathy included in the MRC Glomerulonephritis Registry were re-traced in the computerized British National Health Service Registry. The age of these patients was 51 years and the actuarial survival was 82% at 10 years and 68% at 15 years post biopsy. Thirty% of deaths were attributable to cardiovascular causes. malignancy was reported in 28 cases (8.5%). This figure is much higher than in age and sex matched individuals of the British population (1.1%). Patients with malignancy were older at the time of biopsy (62 years). In 10 cases (36%) the malignancy was recorded as present at the time of biopsy.

Comment: In this large cohort of patients with membranous nephropathy there was a 82% survival at 10 years post-biopsy and a high rate of cancer (Carmine Zoccali, M.D., Reggio Calabria, Italy).
