Intradialytic exercise increases effective dialysis efficiency and reduces rebound

Bicycle exercising for 10 min every 20 min during high efficiency dialysis in eight patients caused a decrease in urea rebound (8 vs. 32%), an increase in Kt/V (1.06 vs. 1.25), and an increase in total urea removal (19.5 vs. 16.8 g) compared to dialysis without exercise.

Comment: This study, like that of Germain et al, lends support to the enhancing effect of differences in regional or organ blood flow on solute disequilibrium. In addition to the known benefits of improving patient stamina and outlook, simultaneous exercise actually improved the efficiency of the dialysis. (Depner)
