This qualitative study using interpretive description explored the question “How do individuals
with diabetes experience kidney failure?” Data consisted of transcripts of in-depth interviews
with seven participants diagnosed with both diabetes and kidney failure, and with a
minimum of 2 years of dialysis experience. Inductive analysis identified diagnosis, illness
intrusion, interactions with health care providers, learning to manage, finding a balance,
and accepting illness as the dominant themes within the participant narratives.
