Clinical reports supporting an association between hemoglobin (Hb) levels, morbidity,
and mortality were a strong part of the dataset used by the National Kidney Foundation
in recommending a target Hb level of 11 to 12 g/dL in patients on dialysis. This article
provides an overview of the potential link between Hb correction and improvements in
morbidity and mortality in patients on dialysis.

Goal:
To increase the awareness of the impact of hemoglobin levels on the mortality
and morbidity rates for patients on dialysis.
Objectives:
1. Relate the rates of hospitalization for patients on dialysis
to age, vascular access, and hemoglobin levels.
2. Compare levels of hemoglobin to the associated risk of
hospitalization.
3. Discuss the mortality rate of patients on dialysis having
hemoglobin levels below and above 11 g/dL.
