Patients with moderate to severe CKD have secondary hyperparathyroidism and Vitamin D deficiency. These patients often have advanced vascular disease. In this symposium, we will first explore new insights into the pathophysiology of secondary hyperparathyroidism. Next strategies for early intervention to prevent the development of mineral and bone disorders in CKD patients will be discussed. The final session will discuss the role of vitamin D activators in the management of CKD-MBD including a review of consensus and controversies in the use of these therapeutic agents.
