Compulsive water drinking in the setting of anticholinergic
drug use: an unrecognized cause of chronic renal failure
Am J Kidney Dis
(Oct) 26:586-589 1995
Four unusual cases of obstructive uropathy causing chronic renal failure are
presented. All four patients had schizo-affective disorders, exposure to
drugs
with anticholinergic activity, psychogenic polydipsia, and no anatomic lesion
causing obstruction. It is postulated that functional bladder outlet
obstruction due to anticholinergics combined with excessive urine volumes
caused
by polydipsia led to chronic renal injury.
