PKD2, a gene for polycystic kidney disease that encodes an
integral membrane protein
Science
(May) 272:1339-1342 1996

The recent discovery of the second ADPKD gene and its associated
protein is a major contribution to unraveling the mysteries
of the pathogenesis of ADPKD. This gene on chromosome 4 and
its protein have some similarities and homologies with
polycystin, the protein product of the PKD1 gene on
chromosome 16. The differences between these protein products
may give clues as to why PKD2 with the same phenotype as
PKD1 is a more benign disease and hopefully to insights into
cyst formation, growth and eventual medical therapies for
people with these genotypes.
