Small peptides as potent mimetics of the protein hormone
erythropoietin
Science
(Jul) 273:458-463 1996

This is a basic science paper which holds out hope for a cheaper alternative
to synthetic EPO to treat anemia in ESRD. Small peptides were developed in
the laboratory which bound to and activated the EPO receptor. The signalling
pathways activated by the peptides seemed to be identical to that of native
EPO. They had no sequence homology with native EPO.
Comment: This important discovery holds new promise for many
new EPO-mimetic drugs, including perhaps eventually, an orally acting agent.
