Prospective study of oral contraceptives and hypertension among
women in the United States
Circulation
(Aug) 94:483-489 1996

The risk of developing hypertension with oral contraceptives has not been
well quantified. Analyzing data from the Nurses Health Study II, Chasan-
Taber et al found that the relative risk of developing de novo hypertension
after a 4-year follow up period in 68,000 participants was 1.8. However,
only a small number of cases of hypertension could be attributed to oral
contraceptive use.
