Calcium and vitamin D3 supplementation prevents bone loss in
the spine secondary to low-dose corticosteroids in patients
with rheumatoid arthritis
Ann Int Med

Long term use of corticosteroids can lead to bone loss and higher
risk of vertebral fracture. Buckely et al show that in patients
receiving low dose steroids (average 5 mg/day prednisone), bone
density decreased in the lumbar spine and trochanter at a rate of
2% per year, but actually increased if calcium supplementation and
vitamin D3 were given concomitantly.
