Randomised crossover trial of naltrexone in uraemic pruritus

Lancet (Dec) 348:1552-1554 1996

Naltrexone administered to 15 chronic dialysis patients caused transient relief of severe intractable pruritus as well as a reduction of histamine levels.

We need to be very cautious in analyzing such studies, as many therapies have been proposed for uremic pruritus, with no one therapy being very effective. This must be viewed as a preliminary study with no definite clinical application as yet. (John T. Daugirdas, M.D., University of Illinois at Chicago)
