Sudden death in chronic dialysis patients
Nephrol Dial Transplant
(May) 12:952-955 1997

Sudden death is a common cause of demise of dialysis patients. However, as
autopsies
are not often obtained, the true cause of death remains a bit of a mystery.
One
presumption is an arrhythmic death, although CVA may also be considered in
some
cases.
In this paper from Japan, an 82% autopsy rate in 113 deaths (93 autopsies)
allowed
some insight as to the cause of these deaths. As 35/93 autopsied deaths
were
considered sudden (defined as death within 24 h of acute illness), one was
able to
ascertain the true causes for these sudden deaths.
