Restoration of voluntary emptying of the bladder by
transplantation of innervated free skeletal muscle
Lancet
(May) 351:1483-1485 1998

Arnulf Stenzl and colleagues were able to restore bladder emptying in 3
patients with spinal cord
injury and chronic bladder overdistension bu dissecting about 2/3 of each
patient's latissimus dorsi
muscle and wrappint it around the bladder. At 16-30 weeks post surgery, the
patients were able to
voluntarily empty their bladders, and the need for further catheterisation
was obviated. Residual
urinary volumes were reasonable (0, 50, and 90 ml, respectively), and maximum
flow rates were in the
18-26 mL/s range. CT evaluation of the bladder confirmed good function.
