Transient thrombocytopenia in peritoneal dialysis patients
associated with niacin

This abstract reports transient thrombocytopenia ocurring in 4 PD
patients during niacin therapy for hypercholesterolemia. In each
case it occurred after 3 months of therapy, and resolved on
dicontinuation of niacin.
Thrombocytopenia is known to occur with niacin therapy, but it is
rare. In this report it was seen in 4 patients within one year. It
would be helpful to know how many other patients received similar
therapy without this complication in order to estimate the increased
risk that may be associated with PD. No details of concomitant EPO
therapy are given.
Comment: Has anyone else had this problem? We don't use often use
niacin for hypercholesterolaemia in the UK.
