Patient-reported hemoperitoneum and its relation to menstruation in women on PD: Results of a patient survey

Although it is known anecdotally that hemoperitoneum can result during menstruation or ovulation, this phenomenon has not been consistently studied.

Holley et al questioned 24 women < 55 years of age on PD regarding menstrual history and frequency of self-reported hemoperitoneum. Mean age was 42 years. 38% were currently menstruating of which 22% reported regular periods. 52% (12/23) reported hemoperitoneum at least once, with 17-15% reporting hemoperitoneum more than 4x/year. Hemoperitoneum coincided with menses in 2/3 of those reporting it, and preceded menses in the remaining third. A relation to mid-cycle ovulation was not described. The authors conclude that hemoperitoneum is a common, mostly benign phenomenon in PD patients. (John T. Daugirdas, M.D., University of Illinois at Chicago)
