Although the activity of lupus typically ebbs after onset of ESRD, with
increased amounts of hemodialysis, and in particular, with CAPD, disease
activity may continue. Ishihara and Krane describe the clinical course of
11
patients with lupus and ESRD treated with CAPD. In 9 of the patients there
was persistent disease activity. Maintenance steroid dosage averaged 14
mg/day; doses over 30 mg/day were associated with a poor prognosis. Four
patients died because of complications of extrarenal lupus.
