While studies have shown specific subsets of patients with CKD-related anemia are appropriate candidates to receive erythropoietin stimulating agents (ESAs), evolving practice guidelines, adjustments to federal warning labels, and reimbursement hurdles have all lined up to confuse and confound the growing number of healthcare providers being asked to treat patients with CKD-related anemia. The purpose of this symposium is to review the evidence and address the issues regarding the treatment of anemia in CKD patients. The first talk will examine the approach to treatment of CKD complications including anemia and provide the rationale for a multidisciplinary approach. The second talk will review and interpret the clinical trial data related to CKD-anemia. The final talk will review guidelines and regulations focusing on information the patient needs to know.
