Does microalbuminuria predict cardiovascular mortality
in treated hypertensive men?

Microalbuminuria is a known risk factor for cardiovascular
complications in diabetic patients. However, the ability of
microalbuminuria to predict complications in hypertensives is less
certain.
The purpose of this study was to prospectively determine
the predictive power of microalbuminuria for total and
cardiovascular mortality in hypertensive patients. 94
hypertensive, diabetic and 345 hypertensive, non-diabetic patients,
aged 50-72 years were followed for a mean of 6.3 years. Among those with
diabetes and hypertension, either microalbuminuria or overt albuminuria were
associated with increased cardiovascular mortality after adjustment for other
risk factors.
However, among hypertensives without diabetes, microalbuminura was not
associated with
increased mortality, although overt albuminuria was.
Comment: The authors conclude that
microalbuminuria is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular
mortality in diabetics with hypertension but not in non-diabetic
hypertensives.
