Hypertension in American Indians: The Strong Heart Study
11th Scientific Meeting, American Society of Hypertension
Am J Hypert (Apr) 9:187A 1996

The Strong Heart Study, a longitudinal study of over 4000 Native-American tribal members in AZ, OK and the Dakotas, examined the prevalence of hypertension in adults over 45. To their surprise, the prevalence of hypertension was equal to or even lower than (Dakotas) in the US population as a whole. No significant relation could be found between hypertension and obesity or hyperinsulinemia, although hypertension was strongly associated with diabetes and albuminuria.

Comment: These are interesting observations, and merit further analysis and clarification. The abstract does not include dietary intake factors, and to state that hypertension is linked with diabetes but not with hyperinsulinemia (in an older diabetic population) requires further explanation.
