Risk factors for CAPD catheter loss following percutaneous
placement

(Sep) 7:1432 1996
Nahman et al looked at the risk factors for catheter loss in 230
consecutive patients over a 7 year old period. Mean catheter survival
was 38 months and 28% of patients suffered catheter loss. Risk
factors identified were previous abdominal surgery and increased body
mass index with relative risks of 2.4 and 1.25, respectively. Both
were statistically significant.
Comment: These findings are important, although not unexpected.
Modality selection in individual patients is influenced by many issues
but if both these risk factors were present in the same patient, there
might now be some justification for informing the patient of the
relatively high risk of PD catheter loss and for directing them
towards hemodialysis. (Peter G. Blake, M.D., Victoria Hospital,
