Malnutrition and neuropathy in non-diabetic CAPD patients

J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Sep) 7:1453 1996

Prior studies have demonstrated that both malnutrition and neuropathy are risk factors for increased mortality levels. To further evaluate this observation, nerve conduction studies and nutritional parameters were measured in 32 CAPD patients. Neuropathy was defined as significant prolonging of terminal latency, decrease in amplitude or slowing of velocity in one nerve.

Significant correlations between neuropathy was found with the following nutritional data: Albumin, prealbumin, IGF-1 and midarm muscle area No correlations were found between neuropathy and the following nutritional data: age, transferrin, triceps skin fold Kt/V, NPCR, serum vitamin B12 levels.

Comment: Malnutrition may contribute to neuropathy in chronic dialysis patients. (Michael V. Rocco, M.D., Bowman Gray School of Medicine)
