Two Vietnamese patients with refractory hypertension: lessons learned
XVIth Annual CAPD Conference
Perit Dial Int Suppl 2 (Feb) 16:S25 1996

This short anecdotal report from California reminds us that refractory hypertension in PD patients may be due to unusual dietary habits. In the case of the two Vietnamese patients, fish sauces and green cornflakes with enormous sodium contents were being consumed. One patient consented to forego the food additives, resulting in great simplification of her anti- hypertensive drug regimen, while the other refused to change dietary habits.

Comment: Peculiar dietary habits, some due to ethnic background, others due to idiosyncratic patient beliefs, can have adverse medical consequences and must be sought out and identified during dietary assessment. (Peter G. Blake, M.D.)
