Protocol for intraperitoneal erythropoietin
XVIth Annual CAPD Conference
Perit Dial Int Suppl 2 (Feb) 16:S66 1996

Chandler et al used erythropoietin, 300 units/kg/week given intra-peritoneally in 25 ml of normal saline (followed by a 20 ml flush) after cycler treatment in children. The erythropoietin was allowed to dwell for 4 hours, after which a midday exchange was performed (without draining the erythropoietin). The hematocrit remained stable and peritonitis incidence was not increased.

Comment: Intra-peritoneal erythropoietin administration has previously been described by Bargman et al (PDI 1992;12:369-372) and Ateshkadi et al (Am J Kidney Dis 1993;21:635-642). IP administration is most effective if given into a "dry" abdomen with a prolonged dwell. This is a feasible mode of administration in patients, such as children, who are afraid of needles. (Beth M.
