Pseudomonas peritonitis management

An outbreak of Pseudomonas peritonitis, some apparently associated with exit-site infection, occurred in California. Investigation suggested that peritonitis was related to contamination of well water, as 50% of patients on wells developed Pseudomonas peritonitis vs. none using city water. Cultures of well water grew Pseudomonas organims. After failure to treat the problem with intensified exit site care, chlorine feeders were placed in the relevant wells. Since this policy has been adopted, the unit concerned has had no further Pseudomonas peritonitis.

Comment: This report is anecdotal, but obviously of interest. (Peter G. Blake, M.D.)
