A cost comparison of dialysis vendor provided vs. PD program provided general medical supplies
XVIth Annual CAPD Conference
Perit Dial Int Suppl 2 (Feb) 16:S86 1996

This study focused on an academic affiliated PD program, and compared costs of obtaining general medical supplies (swabsticks, mask, gauze, soap) from the dialysis vendor versus from general hospital stores. There was a 33% cost reduction for such standard items when obtained from general hospital stores. Over a period of two months for 24 patients the cost savings was in the neighborhood of $5,400.

Comment: This is a very important study which has far reaching economic implications for cost reduction. Such savings may not be realized by all academic affiliated PD programs, many of which experience difficulties in maintaining proper cost-accouting procedures. (James L. Winchester, M.D.)
