Protein losses during CAPD
XVIth Annual CAPD Conference
Perit Dial Int Suppl 2
(Feb) 16:S9 1996
The aim of this study was to compare protein losses on CAPD with those on
Nocturnal Intermittent Peritoneal Dialysis (NIPD). The authors studied a
group of 129 CAPD patients and a group of 28 NIPD patients. Both groups are
said to be comparable in age, time on dialysis, body surface area, and Kt/V.
No difference between the two groups was observed for serum albumin level,
or dialysate protein or albumin losses. Protein losses in subgourps of
patients with different transport characteristics were also not
statistically
different between CAPD and NIPD. The results are presented on a graph
printed with the abstract.
The authors conclude that membrane characteristics and
modality of PD have no significant effect on dialysate
albumin and protein losses.
Comment: The question is interesting, but
the numbers of patients
in the two groups are quite different and means have been compared but
patients were not paired. From the figure shown, it is apparent that
the number of NIPD patients in some of the
transport subgroups is quite small (e.g., n=1, n=4), making it difficult to
assess the interaction between transport group and modality. (Christian
