Seroconversion rates with hepatitis B vaccination in PD patients
XVIth Annual CAPD Conference
Perit Dial Int Suppl 2 (Feb) 16:S72 1996

The Pittsburgh group studied the response rate to recombinant hepatitis B vaccine in in 47 PD and 50 Hd patients. The conversion rate was significantly lower in PD patients (53%) vs. HD patients (74%). The results were surprising in that, in 1987, the same group found equal conversion rates (approximately 73%) in their HD and PD patients (a different non-recombinant HB vaccine was used).

Comment: It is difficult to assess if the better response rate of HD patients in the present study was due to a peculiarity of the vaccine, or to perhaps better Kt/V now for HD patients than in 1987 (adequacy data are not given). However, the results suggest that HB vaccination of PD patients is only moderately successful on initial attempt, even when 40 ug IM are given x 4. (John T.
