Factors predicting the development of fungal peritonitis in
chronic PD patients
XVIth Annual CAPD Conference

(Feb) 16:S42 1996
The authors analyzed their experience with fungal peritonitis. Fourteen
episodes were analyzed, 86%
with Candida species, and 14% with Torulopsa glabrata. The
following predisposing
factors were identified:
Recent peritonitis treated with parenteral antibiotics (all cases)
Frequent antecedent peritonitis (twofold increase in the rate)
Low serum albumin (<3.0 gm/dl)
Declining pre-peritonitis serum albumin.
Comment: This was a well done study with good documentation of
suspected factors predictive
of peritonitis. It identifies a further very serious risk of protein
malnutrition in PD patients.
