A new technique of cuff shaving in CAPD patients

The authors describe a new technique for revising the subcutaneous
tunnel in 13 patients with refractory exit site infections. The
superficial cuff is exposed and shaved from the catheter. A new exit
site is formed by making a 5 mm incision over the tunnel, then
pulling the catheter through this new opening. Using this procedure,
the exit site infection resolved in 9 (69%) with a follow-up of 4.7
to 11.4 months.
Comment: Scalamogna et al have written extensively on revision of
the exit site for chronic exit site infections. The procedure
described in this abstract is considerably less invasive and more
feasible than their previously described procedure, which required
hospitalization and extensive debridement.
