Acquired cystic kidney disease (ACKD) in children
undergoing dialysis and with renal transplants
ASN 30th Annual Meeting, San Antonio

(Sep) 8:70A 1997
The authors demonstrate an incidence of ACKD in a small population of
pediatric dialysis patients which is similar to that reported in adults and,
more importantly, incidence and severity seem to correlate with duration of
ESRD, as in adults. This lends credence to the theory that dysregulated
growth control mechanisms within end-stage kidneys are the cause of ACKD,
rather than an age-related predilection. Bleeding complications of cysts
were important; the absence of neoplasms in such a small group of patients
is not surprising considering its low incidence in larger studies. No
justification is provided for the screening recommendation.
