Mycophenolate mofetil therapy in patients with cyclophosphamide -(CyP) resistant or relapsing diffuse proliferative lupus nephritis (SLE-DPGN)

Nachman et al from the Glomerular Disease Collaborative Network at UNC reported the use of mycophenolate mofetil in 5 patients with diffuse proliferative lupus nephritis previously treated with steroids and cyclophosphamide. Patients were treated because of either cyclophosphamide resistant or recurrent disease. In 4 of 5 patients, there was stabilization or improvement in renal function.

Comment: This limited study may at least provide a precedent for larger prospective trials of MMF in patients with persistent lupus nephritis despite conventional protocols. (N. Kevin Krane, M.D., Tulane University School of Medicine)
