Long-term follow up of the eight patients with diabetic nephropathy who experienced remission of nephrotic syndrome during the captopril study

J Am Soc Nephrol (Sep) 8:120A 1997

Of the 409 patients enrolled in the Captopril Study, 108 had nephrotic-range proteinuria (> 3.5 g/24h) at baseline. Eight patients had remission with therapy (baseline 5.2, final 0.9 g/24h). All 8 were treated with ACE inhibitors and had better BP control than non-remitters. After 8 yrs of follow-up, 6 have stable renal function, 1 had ESRD, and 1 is lost to follow-up.

Comment: The results suggest that long-term remission of nephrotic syndrome and prevention of progression to ESRD can be achieved in selected patients with diabetes and nephrotic syndrome. (David J. Leehey, M.D., Loyola University at Chicago)
