Long-term follow up of the eight patients with diabetic
nephropathy who experienced remission of nephrotic syndrome
during the captopril study

Of the 409 patients enrolled in the Captopril Study, 108 had
nephrotic-range proteinuria (> 3.5 g/24h) at baseline. Eight
patients had remission with therapy (baseline 5.2, final 0.9
g/24h). All 8 were treated with ACE inhibitors and had better BP
control than non-remitters. After 8 yrs of follow-up, 6 have
stable renal function, 1 had ESRD, and 1 is lost to follow-up.
Comment: The results suggest that long-term remission of nephrotic
syndrome and prevention of
progression to ESRD can be achieved in selected patients with
diabetes and nephrotic syndrome. (David J. Leehey, M.D., Loyola
