Intradialytic (ID) weight and ambulatory blood pressure (BPM) correlate positively in children and adolescents receiving hemodialysis.

Stable adolescent chronic hemodialysis patients were repeatedly weighed during a hospitalized interdialytic period with controlled fluid intake and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. Weight gain of 0-8% correlated with systolic BP, although r was only 0.42, suggesting other factors are important as well. Whether the subjects were actually at an ideal dry weight is not clear and they may have spent more time at bedrest while hospitalized compared to their usual outpatient activity. These variables may have limited one's ability to detect the effect of weight gain on blood pressure. Nonetheless, the data confirm the clinical impression that volume is a major component of blood pressure in pediatric dialysis patients. (Susan Mendley, M.D., Northwestern University, Chicago, IL)
