Is microalbuminuria a predictor of cardiovascular and renal
events in essential hypertension (EH)?
ASN 30th Annual Meeting, San Antonio
J Am Soc Nephrol
(Oct) 8:313A 1997
This was a retrospective look at 141 patients with essential hypertension.
54 patients had microalbuminuria (MA) and 87 did not. After a follow up
period
of 7 years, 12/54 with MA vs. 2/87 without MA had adverse cardiovascular
events. The Cr clearance
decreased by 12.7 ml/min in the group with MA versus 7.1 ml/min in the group
without.
Comment: Although it is clear that microalbuminuria is a risk factor
for cardiovascular disease, in this study the patient cohort with the
microalbuminuria also had a higher incidence of risk factors
associated with CV disease such as smoking, higher cholesterol and
triglycerides, and a higher weight, all of which may have had some
confounding
effect on the findings.
