Amiodarone, a forgotten nephrotoxic?
ASN 30th Annual Meeting, San Antonio
J Am Soc Nephrol (Sep) 8:599A 1997

Amiodarone is an antiarrhythmic drug not previously recognized to be nephrotoxic. Barata and colleagues gave rats intraperitoneal amiodarone for 6 days and measure plasma urea, urinary excretion of n-acetyl-glucoseaminidase, and electron microscopy of renal tissue. They found that amiodarone caused renal injury to the same extent as gentamicin.

Comment: This study is the first to demonstrate amiodarone nephrotoxicity in a rat model. Clinicians will want to be aware of the potential for decreased renal function in patients treated with this increasingly popular antiarrhythmic. (George R. Aronoff, M.D., University of Louisville, Kentucky)
