Increased dialysis prescription improved nutrition

There continues to be controversy as to whether Kt/V and PCRn are
linked in a causal or artefactual fashion. Acchiardo et al
followed 130 dialysis patients in whom he increased Kt/V from 1.0
to 1.2. The PCRn improved concomitantly, and the improvement was
highest in patients with lower baseline PCRn values. The serum
cholesterol also increased, as did the serum albumin. The
increases in albumin were most marked in patients with low
initial serum albumin values.
Comment: These
results certainly cannot be explained by any type of statistical
artefact and suggest that indeed increasing dialysis Kt/V does
improve nutritional status.
