High phosphorus directly simulates PTH secretion by human parathyroid tissue
Am Soc Nephrol
J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:957 1995

Slices of human parathyroid glands removed from patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism were incubated in media with high (4 mM) or low (1 mM) phosphorus. In all, the 4 mM solution increased PTH secretion. In 2 glands studied, high P increased the mRNA for PTH. The high P media also prevented the suppression of PTH by high Ca concentrations in the media.

Comment: Similar results have been reported by Silver and co- workers and Slatopolsky and co-workers in rats. The trade-off hypothesis takes another turn. This is further evidence that high serum phosphorus levels may per se stimulate PTH secretion. (Fishbane)
