Diurnal blood pressure variation in normotensive and hypertensive children and adolescents

J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:637 1995

In adult hypertensives, loss of nocturnal BP drop is associated with end-organ damage. However there is little info available about 24 h BP patterns in young patients. In this study 23 normotensive and 23 untreated borderline and mildly hypertensive children with mean ages in the range of 12-14 years were subjected to ambulatory BP monitoring. The diastolic BP fell by about 20% in both normotensives and hypertensives, and systolic BP fell by 12 -14%. The results suggest that in early hypertension the nocturnal fall in blood pressure is preserved. (Daugirdas)
