Atrial natriuretic peptide is reduced both in white and
black salt-sensitive hypertensives

This study extends to white hypertensives previous data by the same
authors showing that salt-sensitive black hypertensives show a
paradoxical decrease in
ANF plasma concentration during salt loading. The implication is that a
defect in ANF secretion may
underlie some aspects of salt sensitivity in both races. However, their
data still shows some racial differences as well: at low salt intake,
plasma ANF levels tended to be lower in SS blacks
than in SR blacks, while ANF levels were clearly higher in SS whites
than in SR whites. The data suggests that ANF secretion may be particularly
impaired
in African Americans.
