Salt loading and hypertension in the elderly
Am Soc Nephrol
J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:639 1995

This study examined the renal and blood pressure effects of an acute IV salt load given over 3 hours to young and old normotensive patients. The salt load caused a marked rise in blood pressure, especially systolic, in the elderly patients but not in the young subjects. The increase in BP was found despite the fact that the elderly excreted significantly more sodium during the 6 hour study period, persumably due to a pressure natriuresis. The data suggest that elderly patients are susceptible to increased blood pressure with salt loading. The presumptive mechanism is a decrease in vascular compliance. (Daugirdas)
