Birth weight and adult hypertension in women
Am Soc Nephrol
J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:639 1995

This study examined the relationship between birth weight and prevalence of adult hypertension in over 160,000 women participants of the Nurses Health Study. Birth weights less than 5.5 pounds were associated with a 40% increased risk of developing hypertension later in life. The results are consistent with recent theories proposing that birth weight and nephron number determine susceptibility to hypertension and progression of certain renal diseases. (Daugirdas)
