Endogenous erythropoietin levels are elevated in patients on
continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis

It is unclear why ESRD patients treated with PD appear to have higher
hematocrits
than their counterparts on HD. One theory would be that PD is more effective
for clearing from the circulation a substance which may inhibit
erythropoiesis. This study measured EPO levels in HD and PD patients already
treated with EPO. The principal finding was higher EPO levels in the blood
of
PD vs. HD patients (42 vs. 11.7 mU/ml).
Comment: These results suggest that endogenous EPO production may be
better
preserved in PD patients. This may partially explain the higher hematocrits
in this
population.
