Formula to calculate nitrogen losses in patients treated with chronic peritoneal dialysis

J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:576 1995

Edefonti et al measured total nitrogen as well as urea excreted in dialysate, urine, and feces in 27 children (mean age 11 years) to derive a formula to estimate nitrogen balance. It must be underlined, however, that this formula was derived based only on data in children and thus needs to be confirmed in adults. Below is their formula:
tND = 1.1 NDurea+0.6
tNU = 1.1 NUurea+0.035
tNF = 0.9 BSC-0.1
therefore :
tN losses (g/kg/day) = tND+tNU+tNF
Where : tND = dialysate nitrogen excretion, tNU = urine nitrogen excretion, TNF = fecal nitrogen excretion, NDurea = dialysate urea excretion, NUurea = urine urea excretion, BSC = body surface. tN = total nitrogen losses per day. (Verger)
