Microspheres for specific adsorption as supplement for
hemodialysis in acute renal failure

This study describes the development of microspheres coated
with antibodies to endotoxin and various cytokines
(TNF) which are used to remove cytokines from the circulation by
adsorption. The microspheres are recirculated in the filtrate
side of a special plasmafilter at a high flow rate of 8L/min with
subsequent plasma filtration. In the described sheep animal studies,
endotoxin and TNF levels were significantly reduced using this system.
Comment:
The system appears to be an innovative approach to cytokine
removal by adsorption and lends itself for use with a continuous
dialysis technique. It is not clear why such high flow rates were
necessary and what the binding capacity of the microspheres is.
