Pressure causes fluid loss from the peritoneal cavity to
the body

Flessner studied the influence of intraperitoneal pressure (IPP) on fuid
loss from the peritoneal cavity in rats. He concluded that peritoneal lymph
flow is not dependent on IPP, whereas fluid losses from the peritoneal cavity
to the abdominal wall are directly proportional to IPP above a pressure of
2.0 cm H2O. The results suggest that maintenance of a low IPP
should help maintain ultrafiltration during PD.
