Hypoalbuminemia: a major risk factor for cardiac disease
in ESRD
Am Soc Nephrol
J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract)
(Nov) 6:529 1995
261 hemodialysis and 171 PD patients were followed prospectively
for an average of 41 months with annual echocardiograms. In the
HD patients, After adjusting for age, diabetes, and other
factors, low serum albumins were associated with LV dilatation
and de novo or recurrent cardiac failure. Low serum albumins
also were associated with recurrent ischemic heart disease and
with increased cardiac and total mortality. In the PD patients
low serum albumins were associated with concentric LV
hypertrophy, de novo cardiac failure, and increased overall
mortality.
Comment: The reasons for the
differences between HD and PD patients are not clear.
