Amelioration of left ventricular hypertrophy in long-term
hemodialysis patients

Previous studies have demonstrated regression of LVH with EPO therapy and
correction of anemia. In this study, echocardiograms were performed at 10
and
then again at 20 years after starting HD. Various factors were studied as
possible predictors of a change in LVH. Hematocrit was found to be
correlated
with change in LVH (r=-0.37).
Comment: Adds to the fund of data confirming the relationship between
anemia
correction and regression of LVH. The most interesting thing about this
study
was the fact that regression of LVH was seen in long-term HD patients (up to
20 years).
