The deletion polymorphism in the ACE gene is a risk factor for
the progression to renal failure independent of the M235T
polymorphism in the angiotensinogen gene

At the ASN meeting a number of papers were presented suggesting
that deletion polymorphism of the ACE gene is associated with
increased risk of progression of renal failure. In this paper
Hamaguchi and colleagues studied deletion polymorphism of the ACE
gene and M235t polymorphism of the angiotensinogen gene and
their role in the progression of IgA nephropathy. 53 patients
were studied. They were divided into two groups according to
rate of progression. The group with rapid progression was found
to have a higher incidence of the DD genotype than in the group
with lack of progression or in controls. There was no difference
among the various subgroups of M235t polymorphism.
