Nocturnal blood pressure in treated hypertensive African Americans compared to treated hypertensive European Americans

J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:641 1995

This study examined the nocturnal fall in blood pressure in black vs. white hypertensives. All patients were receiving antihypertensive drugs. 62 black hypertensives and 72 white hypertensives, each with a daytime mean MAP of 107 mm Hg were studied. The nocturnal MAP was 97 in blacks and 90 in whites, a highly significant difference. The results suggest that blacks with hypertension do indeed have higher nocturnal blood pressure levels.

Comment: The problem with this study is how well the races were matched for risk factors, especially regarding LVH and renal function, which may have affected the nocturnal blood pressure in a differential fashion. (Daugirdas)
