EPO is suspected to have effects on subsets of lymphocytes.
This study compared HD patients receiving EPO to "matched"
non-EPO treated patients and studied their responses to either a
T-cell dependent antigen (tetanus toxoid) or a T-cell
independent antigen (pneumococcal antigen). Antibody levels
were measured every two weeks for 2 months. No difference was
detected in the T-cell independent antigen groups but a marked
rise in antibody titer following T-cell dependent antigen
administration was noted in the EPO treated group in comparison
to controls. If indeed the authors have selected a truly valid
control group these early results suggest T-cell function may be
affected by EPO.
